Hearing and speech impaired SMS service

SouthDoc’s SMS service lets registered patients who are deaf or have a speech impairment reach the out-of-hours GP service independently. It is a safe, patient-friendly, efficient and confidential texting service.
How to register
Registration is free and only needs to be done once. Once registered you will be sent the SouthDoc text number.
1. Complete the registration form
Download the pre-registration form, fill it in and send it to us by email or post.

2. We create your patient profile
SouthDoc creates a profile for you with the demographic and medical information from your form, so we do not have to ask for it again when you text.
3. You receive the text number
We send you a confirmation text message with the designated SouthDoc text number. Use it during our opening hours whenever you need the out-of-hours service.
The text number is for registered deaf and speech impaired users only.
Using the texting service
When you need SouthDoc, send a text to the designated number. Include:

Whether you can travel to your nearest treatment centre
SouthDoc will text you back with an appointment at a treatment centre. The centre will be told to expect you, so you can go straight in when you arrive.

Questions about the service
Who can register?
Anyone who is deaf, hard of hearing or has a speech impairment and lives in the SouthDoc area of Cork and Kerry.
Is the service confidential?
Yes. Your texts are handled by the SouthDoc team in the same way as a phone call, and a summary is sent to your own GP the next morning.
Is there a charge?
Standard SouthDoc fees apply. Medical card and GP visit card holders are covered. See fees and payment.
